I have never had lessons or classes, and I am totally self taught.
All designs are mine.  All glass hand cut by me, even circles.

   Bio

Rebecca York began the fine art of mosaic in December  2003.
After beginning a six month chemical therapy treatment, Becky was very ill and could not do much.  She became stir crazy and decided
to use her artistic creativity to keep her mind occupied.  Always awed by the beauty of glass, Becky
experimented. The result was beautiful mosaic stained glass pieces. She used many different found materials
in her work including deer antler, agates, mirror, and clay.  For Christmas 2003, Becky gave her art as
gifts. Her family was literally amazed at this gift she had tuned into - so was she. For her birthday in January 2004, her
family helped enter her into a juried art show. Their goal was to encourage her to share this gift. It worked; everyone
loved her work and she continues to share it today.  We hope you love it as well
.

Enjoy!

Artist Statement

My art all started with Christmas presents I had made for my daughter & son-in-law December 2003.  I was on the last month of chemical therapy treatment of Riboviron & Interferon.  I could barely take care of myself at times I was so weak, extremely fatigued, and in pain.  Thanks to HGTV and the bowling ball someone was mosaicing, I thought I could sit and do that, surely.  After all, it was Christmas time and I had nothing for anyone & no money coming in. So, I started making things~mosaics, from my living room coffee table.

That is how it all started and evolved.  The "pieces"  just keep falling into place (pun intended!).

My designs and styles are unique from all other mosaics and glass works.  All are my own creations, from start to finish.  I am completely self taught.  I have never had any art classes of any kind for any art form. I cut all the glass by hand - even each fur piece on my wolves and other animals..  When I think of a design, I grab a tablet and sketch it out or write the idea down.  Ideas come to me often and at any time.

I am disabled and have fibromyalgia now as a result of the chemical therapy.  Fibro is debilitating at times, but,  I am in a place of pure joy when I can do my art, which, fortunately is often!

My unique specialty is doing stained glass mosaics on glass - but especially on old and antique windows. I developed a technique to apply stained glass to glass where it is transparent so that light and color comes through. It is very striking!
Repurposing, reusing, and recycling is an added bonus to my technique!

I hope you find my art as enjoyable to look at as I do to make.  It comes from a place of love and pure joy!

A few side notes:

Future Dreams & Goals:
We will be opening an art gallery here at our home possibly 2011!  Later we will have an art & nature retreat.  Our sauna is completed and will be available with the packages. A treehouse and a couple of teepees will be available.  The bike/hiking trail, which Mike hand built as a mountain biking trail since April 1997,  will go up to the top of our mountain with places to stop and rest or meditate along the way.  At the end & top of the trail, you will see the panoramic views of Lake Chatcolet,  the St. Joe River, Round Lake, Benewah Lake,  Heyburn State Park, St. Joe Baldy Mountain, Reeds Baldy Mountain, the Benewah Valley, and the mountains all around and beyond.  There will be a place to rest and have a snack or meal at the top of the trail so you can take it all in.  There are caves and rocks to explore above and beside the trail
Eventually the treehouse will be solar powered.  We plan to build a sweat hut  with a dipping pond for visitors use.  There is a  horsehoe pit  and a large fire pit for evening.  We will offer organic produce from our garden, fine wines, fine beers, teas, coffees, &  home baked breads & treats.  We will also have a masseuse on site periodically. We plan to also have mountain bikes eventually for the trail for those that would rather bike than hike! These package experiences will be offered on a  limited seasonal basis.  The details to be ironed out as we grow closer to the reality.  We are very excited about this endeavor.  This is a very time consuming effort to get it all ready and built, not to mention the money it will cost.  So, it will take some time.

Our goal is to offer a getaway to re-energize your mind, body, spirit, and for you to discover your own creativity.

Past:
My previous job before art was as a licensed home day-care provider for close to 20 yrs -  from 1980 to 1999 & Foster Care mother for the last 5 of those years.  All while raising my own two - girl b. 1980, boy b. 1990 - as a single mother.  After,  in 2001 to 2003, I went to North Idaho College which was an hours drive each way and very scary in winter since I had to cross over a pass...but I actually did it! ~ not bad for a born and raised Oregonian! I was  enrolled in the Computer Internet Technology Program.  Before that, in the late 1970's and part of 1980, I worked at Troy-Bilt Garden Way Co. in Portland, Oregon both on Marine Drive and at Jantzen Beach Center - and yes I own a Troy-Bilt, always will - they are still the best !  I did every aspect at Troy-Bilt but mostly demonstrations of products and television commercials.  It was the best job I ever had besides the one I have now, which I can't really call a job!.  Before that Clark County Commissioner's in Vancouver, WA. in the early 1970's as their Girl Friday.  I also worked at Wilber-Ellis in Portland, Oregon and a large restaurant supply house in Portland in the early 1970's.  I was a secretary and receptionist in those days.
